Update from Kaikoura. Calm conditions and no wind can make seabirding a bit of a challenge, but the two Kaikoura pelagics certainly did not disappoint. Fabulous close up views of stunning seabirds is what it is all about. Over the 2 trips we had 6 Gibson’s Albatross, 1 Northern and 6 Southern Royal Albatross – supported by numerous Salvin’s and a few NZ White Capped Albatross. Good numbers of Cape, Norther Giant and Westland Petrels. 1 White-chinned and 2 Grey-faced Petrel were also good to see. Hutton’s (1000+), Sooty, Short-tailed and Fluttering Shearwaters meant we had a good tally of tubenoses.
Still struggling for Cirl Bunting though – seems to be elusive this year. But an evening drive turned up good views of Little Owl in the fading light.
